Why children are becoming violent these days? This thought has been coming in every parent's mind since the news broke down on media in the case of Pradyuman (as per CBI revelation). How can a teen turned so violent, that too just to postpone examination and PTM. But, if there is a little fact in this, it is an alarming situation for our children as well as for all the parents.
Violent children may show any of the behaviour, which may include giving threats, bullying, harm to animals, aggression toward others, explosive temper tantrums and even armed assault. Children who show a pattern of such behavior are often diagnosed with a psychiatric illness, known as conduct disorder.
The causes of violent behavior and of conduct disorder, is difficult to pin down. However, a few are:
Hereditary or genetic
Parenting issues: such as poor supervision; erratic, harsh discipline; parental disharmony; rejection of the child; and limited involvement in the child's activities.
Exposure to violence: esp in childhood
Social and economic Factors: such as single parenting, the breakup of a marriage, parental unemployment, poverty and severe deprivation.
Media: especially violence on television, in movies and in video games, is causing violence in children and teens.
Focusing on last point, many studies show that extensive viewing of television violence may cause children to become more aggressive and anxious. Children who watch violent TV shows many hours in a week, may become inured to violence and begin to see the world as a scary and unsafe place. Even, other modes of media, especially violent video games have shown negative effects on young minds. This is the mental poison that defiles and deforms the minds of our youth.
There are various types of video games available in the market and are intended to target different aspects of a child’s life. These video games are comprised of a variety of educational, serious and casual games. But in reality, we don't know which game a child is going to choose; a game about learning or a game where they drive cars at unruly speed, killing zombies, fighting through guns, blood sheding or even blue whale game?
Report on violent video games released by American Psychological Association (APA) in 2015 demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and heightened aggressive behavior, aggressive cognitions and reduced prosocial behavior, empathy and sensitivity to aggression.”
It is important that the parents monitor what kinds of games children are playing and being exposed to; also what they are viewing on TV or other mediums. Parents must engage in frank conversations to help stave off any lasting emotional effects of what their child/ren might have seen. Be their best friend, guide and role models!
